Global Commitment in Multidatabase Systems

Won Kim UniSQL, Inc. 9390 Research Blvd. Austin, TX 78759 In this paper, we investigate the reliability aspects of transaction processing in multidatabase systems from a formal point of view. We define a new correctness notion called global commitment (GC) for reliable transaction processing in a multidatabase environment in which local DBMSs may not support the prepared state of the two phase commitment protocol. A multidatabase transaction management that produces a globally committable history can guarantee the commitment of global (multi-site) transactions without violating the local autonomy requirements, even in the presence of transaction and system failures. The GC notion, together with serializability and recoverability notions, are used as the correctness criteria for reliable transaction processing in multidatabase systems.

An Extended Transaction Model for Multidatabase Systems
Transaction management in multidatabase systems presents numerous challenges due to the heterogeneity of the underlying databases and the need to preserve autonomy of local. systems. On the other hand, the existence of multiple databases frequently makes it possible to accomplish the objective of a transaction by performing an action in one of several. functionally equivalent databases. This pr...

The preservation of local autonomy and the atomic commitment of global Lransactions present conllieting exigencies to the design of mullidalabase transaction management systems. In this paper, we investigate a forward recovery approach to the atomic commitment of global transactions while al the same lime preserving local autonomy. A theoretical basis for the application of forward recovery to ...
متن کاملTransaction scheduling in dynamic composite multidatabase systems
This paper proposes composite multidatabase architecture consisting of multiple, possibly heterogeneous, peer multidatabase servers distributed on a communications network. The domain of each multidatabase server is treated as a multidatabase cell. Global transactions could span multiple multidatabase cells, sometimes forcing multidatabase servers to act as component database systems. Although ...
متن کاملAtomic Commitment in Grid Database Systems
Atomic Commitment Protocol (ACP) is an important part for any distributed transaction. ACPs have been proposed for homogeneous and heterogeneous distributed database management systems (DBMS). ACPs designed for these DBMS do not meet the requirement of Grid databases. Homogeneous DBMS are synchronous and tightly coupled while heterogeneous DBMS, like multidatabase systems, requires a top layer ...
متن کاملMultidatabase Recoverability and Recovery
To support global transactions in a multidatabase environment , we must coordinate the activities of multiple Database Management Systems, that were designed for independent, stand-alone operation. The autonomy and heterogeneity of these systems present a major impediment to the direct adaptation of transaction management mechanisms developed for distributed database systems. In this paper we a...
